Book by Sapardi Djoko Damono

rryalsrussell – Sapardi Joko Damono is one of the literary “heritages” of this country. His writing is timeless and deeply embedded in the memories of readers, even those who were previously uninterested in poetry. But therein lies Sapardi’s advantage. His series of poems are famous for their simple style, but have complex meanings and are full of ambiguity. It is interesting to analyze his work.

This Surakarta-born writer has been active in writing since the 1960s, including Dukam Abadi (1969), Mata Pisau (1974), Akuarium (1974), and Pelahu Kertas (1984), and has published at least 18 works of poetry. ). and June Lane (1994). But that’s not all. This professor at the Faculty of Culture, University of Indonesia, has written several works of fiction and non-fiction and translated several world-famous literary works into Indonesian.

Rain of June itself contains 102 poems, poems and short stories written by Sapardi between 1964 and 1994, and is considered his most popular poetry collection. The title itself is taken from a poem with the same title which he wrote in 1989.

June Rain was first published as a collection of poems by Gracinde in 1994 and republished in 2015 by Gramedia Pustaka Utama as the first part of a trilogy of novels interpreting her poems. The two sequels to this trilogy are entitled Pingkan Fold Distance (2017) and What is Mortal is Time (2018).

First of all, pay attention to the weather

Sapardi explained the reasons behind the title June Rain which were revealed in various interviews. This story is motivated by his surprise when he saw heavy rain during a visit to Jakarta. The reason is that June is synonymous with the hot dry season in Yogyakarta and Solo, the two cities where he lived and worked at that time. This extreme weather was the inspiration for a famous poem. But if you dig deeper into the meaning of each line, you will discover something deeper than just unpredictable climate change.

Starting from poetry, films, to music

The collection of poems and poems collected by Rain Juni is Sapardi Joko Damono’s masterpiece, but what’s great is that this poetry collection is available in English, Japanese, Arabic, Russian and Mandarin.

This time, there is a hint of gloom in Sapardi’s work. The poems in “Someday” are more existential in nature, aware of the limitations of life but optimistic about the longevity of memories through work, whatever the form. Sapardi previously explored this theme in his short poem “What is Mortal is Time” (1978), which was also published in his book “Rain in June.”

Through that journey, June Lane and her authors gained significant support and recognition. Sapardi’s last award was at the 2018 ASEAN Book Awards in the “June Rain” Best Book Compilation Award category held at the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair.

But of course June Rain is not the only proof of Sapardi’s greatness as a poet, there are still many of his poetry books that must be read, such as Paper Boats and Aquarium. For readers who want to know more about Sapardi’s poetic works, Sapardi has also written a book with the theme Saying This, Meaning That, and Otherwise Wahana, so that readers can find out more about Sapardi’s poetry and works, your perfect product. to absorb.

In 2017, director Leni Nurkayo Hestu Saputra and screenwriter Titien Watimena adapted the story of Sarwono and Pingkan from the novel Rein Bulan Juni into a film. The film with the same title was released in 2017, starring Adipati Dolken as Sarwono and Verov Vexia as Pinkan. In some scenes of the film, entire lines of poetry are inserted into the dialogue verbatim. And what is even more authentic, Sapardi plays Sarwono’s father.

But apart from films, “June Rain” is also often incorporated into other art forms. The most famous is the recorded version by Ali Marib and Leda Gaudiamo, also known as Ali Reda. In 1987, the folk singing duo was invited by the Minister of Education and Culture to take part in an ambitious project aimed at celebrating poetry through song and making it accessible to a wider audience. In this way, the poem “June Rain” (1990) was made into a music album. And the classic Indonesian film Love in a Piece of Roti (1991) featured an adaptation of Ratna Oktaviani’s musical “I Want” as its soundtrack. Sapardi Joko Damono died on July 19 2020 at the age of 80 years. However, thanks to the simplicity that creates recognition in every piece of his work, Sapardi Gioco Damono has become immortal.
