Second in our month-long Blog-A-Thon of MuseItUp MG/YA Authors is Sue Perkins. She is going to tell us about her upcoming book Spirit Stealer. Here is the banner she made since she hasn’t yet received a cover. I LOVE this banner and want that image.
So, let’s find out about this intriguing image, Sue.
What did you first read?
I think the first books I read by myself were Enid Blighton books, then I progressed to the Bobbsey Twins. I joined the local library at seven years old and after that I always had a book beside me.
What is your favorite genre?
Fantasy. Definitely. I love to read and write fantasy, especially young adult and middle grade fantasy. My first Middle Grade book Spirit Stealer will be on sale in October with MuseItUp Publishing and I’m very excited about it’s release.
What type of reading inspires you to write?
Again it has to be fantasy. My brain works outside of the box most of the time. I see a name, or watch something happening and my thoughts go off at a tangent. A book begins to grow from the small kernel of what I have seen.
What well known writers do you admire most?
The Middle Grade writers I admire and love to read are Brian Jacques with his Redwall series and Jenny Nimmo with her Charlie Bone series. Both of them capture the reader and take them into a different world.
How do you create your characters?
They create themselves. I get the idea and give them a name. From that time they take over. If they don’t like the name they tell me. I find it a bit difficult to carry on with the story until I get the name right.
Are you equally good at telling stories orally?
I used to be, but now my children are grown and my grandson is in another country, so I don’t get to use my oral skills very often.
Does reader feed-back help you?
Definitely. I asked a friend’s son to read the first draft of Spirit Stealer. His comments were that he liked the story but could I please put in some chapter titles. It had never occurred to me to do this.
Could you tell us a bit about your book?
Spirit Stealer takes place in the nighttime world of a library. At night the characters come out to play, but something sinister lurks in the basement. Children who stay in the library are in danger of never being seen again.
What are you working on now?
I hope to start writing a young adult fantasy book set in a world of dragons. I love dragons. It’s the second in a series but I haven’t quite got the story into my mind yet.
Thank you so much for the interview Rebecca.
